Unit 5

This Unit will introduce you to the principles of classroom differentiation which aim to offer all pupils a fair chance to experience academic success and equality of educational opportunity.

The Unit argues that effective teachers will differentiate their teaching to meet the needs of all pupils, including the more able, those with special educational needs and those who are learning English as a second language. It is also suggested that teachers need to take account of the varying interests, experiences and achievement of boys and girls from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this Unit, students will have

  • considered the meanings of the key concepts of differentiation;
  • developed a preliminary definition of differentiation.
  • understood some of the links between pupil grouping and differentiation;
  • applied some of the principles of differentiation to the planning, teaching and assessment of learning.
