Theories of Intelligence

Introduction

There are few topics in the field of educational psychology which attract greater interest and controversy  than ‘intelligence'. In this Unit, you will be asked to offer your own views of the concept as a basis for critically  evaluating Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. After comparing his ideas with traditional theories of  intelligence, you will consider some implications of his views for classroom practice.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this Unit, you will have:

  • discussed some basic ideas about the nature of intelligence
  • critically evaluated some of the principles of intelligence testing
  • explained the key features of multiple intelligence theory
  • understood some of the limitations of multiple intelligence theory
  • reviewed and revised your personal theory of learning in the light of module content.
