Unit 1

Purposes of the School Curriculum

Although it may be concealed under the surface of everyday activity, every teacher has a philosophy of teaching. This opening Unit aims to bring the philosophy which is hidden in your own classroom practice out into the open.

As well as asking you to consider actual and possible purposes for education, this Unit will also encourage you to think about different ways in which the curriculum may help to realise educational aims.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, students will have considered and written about

  • the aims of the school curriculum, past and present
  • the aims of particular school subjects
  • what a curriculum could and should include
  • the concept of the 'hidden curriculum'
