Activity 3

A Teacher's Role in Group Work

Effective group work does require a significant amount of preparation by the teacher. Pupils do need to learn how to cooperate with one another.

Younger pupils often lack the skills necessary to collaborate effectively with their peers.

However, there are many strategies which a teacher can adopt to increase the likelihood that children will work together well. These include:

  • Providing clear structures
  • Using strategies that support positive behaviour
  • Establishing clear rules and procedures
  • Selecting groups to suit the task
