Activity 1

What Do You Mean by Intelligence?

Before moving on to consider ways in which intelligence tests work and what they measure, please think in some depth about what you understand personally by intelligence.

REFLECT: Imagination and intuition are sometimes associated with Arts subjects. Logic and mathematical reasoning are often associated with Science subjects. Choose two contrasting school subjects and think about the different kinds of  intelligence which are needed in each.

Next think of two "intelligent" people, children or adults, whom you know. In what ways are they intelligent? How are  they similar and how are they different?

WRITE: In the light of your comparisons, write your own definition of ‘intelligence' with an explanation as to why you have chosen this particular formulation.
